Enervest signs landmark deal with Octopus Australia for the Hanworth BESS in New South Wales
Enervest is cementing its reputation as a leading Australian energy developer with an established
portfolio of high-quality assets, today announcing the sale of its Hanworth BESS project to Octopus
Australia, in a strategic move to accelerate portfolio development and focus on its long-term own and
operate strategy.
Located near Bannaby, west of Bowral in New South Wales, the 1.2 GW / 4.8 GWh Hanworth Battery
will connect into Transgrid’s Bannaby Terminal Station that borders the site. Once operational, the
battery will smooth out variability in generation and help to stabilise the grid, ensuring a more reliable
energy supply.
Octopus Australia will progress the Hanworth BESS through planning approvals, grid connection and
procurement activities ahead of construction. Enervest will continue its role across planning,
environmental, community and stakeholder engagement, in partnership with Octopus Australia, to
support positive long-term outcomes for the region.
Enervest CEO, Ross Warby, said the transaction underscored Enervest’s ability to develop high-
quality energy projects and secure strategic capital and partnerships to support their delivery.
“Hanworth is an example of Enervest’s ability to originate, develop and de-risk complex energy
assets, underpinned by significant investment and development work to date. This transaction is a
critical step for Enervest as we right size our portfolio and focus on our long-term own-and-operate
strategy, while transitioning this asset to a partner who is well positioned to advance it at pace and
meet growing demand.
“As a landowner and ratepayer, we’ll remain actively involved in the project and the region, and we
value the trusted relationships we’ve built over the past 18 months. We look forward to continuing our
engagement with local stakeholders to ensure the project delivers real, lasting benefit to the Southern
Tablelands region of New South Wales.”
Octopus Australia CEO, Sam Reynolds, said the company’s continued investment demonstrated
confidence in Australia’s energy sector at a time when many others were hesitating.
“While some investors are stepping back, we’re stepping forward,” Mr Reynolds said.
“Australia still needs new power stations to replace ageing coal plants. The difference is that today we
can build them using a mix of solar, wind and batteries instead of smokestacks.”
“By owning and operating our projects as one portfolio, we can deliver reliable power every day of the
year – not just when the sun shines or the wind blows. This is about replacing coal with clean energy
that works in the real world.”
